Rules - How the Race Works

HOW THE RACE WORKS:

Goal: The object of the race is to earn the most points by completing campus greening projects from the beginning to the end of the contest period (September 1, 2010 - November 12, 2010).

Earning Points: Points are earned as each campus team completes the projects they sign up for. In order to earn points, each team must select a project on www.greatpowerrace.org (also see the “Great Power Race Project List” PDF). Projects are organized by category and difficulty level. There are 15 categories and 3 difficulty levels. 5 Point projects are determined to be the easiest to take on, the 10 point projects require more time and effort, and the 25 point projects are more ambitious.

Once a project is completed, each team must complete a short form on www.greatpowerrace.org explaining the project, and providing documentation that the project was completed.

Any team may choose as many projects to complete as they think they can take on. All are encouraged to attempt the more difficult projects, as those are the ones that make the most impact!

New Projects: If a team has a project idea that is not somehow conveyed in an existing category or difficulty level, teams may submit additional projects for consideration in the “other” category in the project list on the GPR website. Each new project must be approved by the GPR coordinators, after which point, it will be added to the list under an existing category, so that it is available for other teams to take on. These new projects will be identified as “new” when they are added, for ease in searching. Before submitting an additional project, first check to be sure your project idea cannot somehow exist within the framework of a existing idea in the project list—they were designed to be flexible and encompass many more detailed possibilities.

Bonus Rounds: Throughout the course of the campaign, a series of Bonus Rounds will take place and be announced at the same time to all teams, so all have an equal chance to participate. Bonus rounds will be geared toward creativity and publicity.

Semi-Final Round: In the final period of the Race (November 12 - 24), a semi-final round will take place, when the highest scoring teams in each category and overall will be asked to submit a more formal report about all their projects by no later than the 24th of November. The semi-final round is intended to provide a more thorough explanation of projects, and to level the playing field.

Judging Panel: The Great Power Race team is selecting a panel of high-profile judges from each of the three participating countries. Criteria for judges are expertise in the field of climate and clean energy solutions, notoriety in their particular countries, and a commitment to help publicize the race to their networks. Following the Semi-Final round, the top teams and their semi-final applications will be sent to the Judging panel, who will select the final winners. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at a special event broadcast online from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference taking place in Cancun, Mexico between the 29th of November and the 10th of December.

10/10/10 Day: The 10th of October, 10/10/10, is a particularly special date for GPR. It is a day that communities all of the world will be using to celebrate climate solutions as part of the Global Work Party, coordinated by 350.org. It will be an ideal day to highlight your GPR projects and recruit volunteers to join you, and we highly encourage you and your team to take part. Please register your GPR team’s work party for 10/10/10 on the 350 website: www.350.org/1010, and in the “tag” section of the registration form, please include a “GPR” tag.
